Announcing the Fable Author Program: funding 100 debut novels

Published on may 30, 2026

Author Program

The hardest book anyone writes is the first one. It's written at night, around jobs and families, with no advance, no editor, and no guarantee anyone will ever read it. We built Fable for exactly that writer — and today we're going further.

The Fable Author Program will fund 100 debut novels over the next year. Each selected writer receives a $5,000 grant, a professional editorial pass on their finished manuscript, and a year of Fable Studio for them and a writing partner.

Why grants, and not another contest with exposure as the prize? Because time is the real cost of a first book. Five thousand dollars is two months of evenings bought back, a childcare bill covered, a laptop that doesn't crash at 80,000 words. The writers we serve don't need applause to finish — they need hours.

How selection works

Submissions open June 15th. We ask for three chapters and a one-page synopsis — that's it. A rotating panel of authors, editors, and Fable writers reads every submission blind. No genre restrictions, no follower counts, no platform requirements.

Blind matters. The panel sees pages, not names, bios, or social handles. Romance is read next to literary fiction next to middle-grade fantasy, and each is judged against the only question that matters: does this book make you want the fourth chapter?

We don't want the hundred most marketable books. We want the hundred books that wouldn't exist otherwise.

What selected writers get

Beyond the grant, every selected writer is paired with a professional editor for a full pass on their finished manuscript — the structural read most debut authors can't afford and don't know they need. Cohort members share a private community, monthly craft sessions, and a direct line to the Fable team.

There is no rights grab. We take nothing: no royalties, no first-look, no obligation to publish with anyone. The book is yours; the point of the program is that it exists.

Dates

Applications close August 1st, and the first cohort will be announced in September. If you've been circling your first book for years — this is your sign.
